The Draytek Vigor 2820 series is the most popular range of routers from Draytek - one of the most respected names in internet connectivity in the UK, having won countless awards including the PC Pro award for wireless routers in 2007, 2008 and 2009.
This is the 2820VSN model, which includes wireless LAN and VoIP support, with ISDN connections. Other models include the 2820VN (for analogue lines only), the base 2820 and the 2820N - which includes wireless but not voice-over-IP facilities.
The 2820VSN has a comprehensive specification which far outshines the average prosumer router including a professional stateful firewall, wireless LAN, dual WAN ports with 3G modem support, full VPN capabilities, gigabit LAN port for server (and three 100Mbit ports) and of course Voice over IP. A detailed discussion of the 2820 series can be found at Drayteks web site (www.draytek.co.uk) and in our advice pages but here are a few highlights:
Dual WAN The primary WAN port on the 2820 is for ADSL and is compliant with all UK variants including ADSL2+. A secondary WAN port can be connected via Ethernet to (for example) another ADSL modem and used for backup or load balancing. Alternatively, a front-mounted USB socket is provided for connecting a 3G modem or mobile phone as backup, load balancing or even as the only WAN connection providing a totally portable network. (Note: most popular phones and 3G sticks are supported but please check the up to date list on Drayteks web site to ensure your device is compatible.)
A new feature for the 2820 series is analogue dial-up. Using Draytek's AFM-102 modem (available separately), the router can be set to connect to a V92 (52kbps) dial-up service automatically if the ADSL line goes down - disconnecting automatically when ADSL is restored.
NAS A USB storage device can be plugged into the USB port to provide Network Attached Storage. Any FAT32 formatted device (including memory sticks) can be used and the router will provide FTP access to the storage both locally and via the internet. Access can be controlled by usernames and passwords, each of which can have their own directories and/or file access rights. File Sharing is also available as a Windows 'network drive'.
Wireless The 2820VSns wireless capability supports 802.11b, 801.11g and 802.11n Draft 2.0 with the latest MIMO technology with three aerials (2T3R). WDS (Wireless Distribution System) is supported and there are a wealth of management features including multiple SSIDs (up to 4 wireless LANs), time scheduling, access point discovery, and more.
Firewall Draytek are rightly famous for their firewalls and the 2820 series has a superb, richly-specified grown-up firewall implementation. This feature alone justifies the price tag of a Draytek router.
VPN Facilities The 2820 series supports up to 32 concurrent VPN Tunnels (incoming or outgoing), using PPTP, IPSec, L2TP, or L2TP over IPSec with MPPE and hardware-based AES/DES/3DES encryption. LAN-to-LAN and teleworker-to-LAN connectivity are fully supported, as well as DHCP over IPSec, NAT-Traversal, Dead Peer Detection, VPN Pass-Through etc.
VoIP Draytek has built on its established reputation for Voice-over-IP products by adding even more features with the 2820VSN. The Vigor 2820VSN has an analogue phone port and an analogue line port to provide full PSTN and VoIP integration on the same phones, via both the Internet and your regular analogue line. If you have an ISDN phone, you can also use that on the unit's 'Internal S0-Bus' to make additional VoIP phone calls.
The analogue 'Line' port connects into your regular analogue line (PSTN/POTS). This then gives the telephones access to your analogue line to allow you to make calls as well as your VoIP facility (you can select the PSTN line instead of VoIP by dialling #0). Incoming calls are automatically switched through to your telephone(s) (either one or both) so that each phone can be used for both VoIP and POTS calls. Both telephones plugged into your router have access to VoIP and your analogue line. In addition, using the 'Digit-Map' facility you can set rules about particular call destinations using either the POTS line or your SIP/VoIP service. For example, local calls can be routed via your PSTN line (if you have a free calls package for example) whereas international calls can go via your preferred VoIP provider; there is flexibility to have several digit-map rules.
The Vigor 2820VSN features two ISDN interfaces which provide connectivity to ISDN BRI lines (ISDN2e, BT Highway) for Internet access (either primary or backup) and also an internal S0-Bus for connection of ISDN digital telephone sets. Even without an external ISDN line, this gives you additional VoIP telephone capacity as both ISDN ports can be configured as internal buses with two phones connected to each port (each ISDN S0 bus is full 2B+D). |
